Description
In the 66th year of our era, at the beginning of Great revolt against Rome, the group sikariyev led by Menakhem Ben-Yeguda from Galilee captured Masada, having fought it off the Roman garrison which was there. The Roman garrison made then at most 40 people. In the years of revolt Masada became a shelter for many Zealots who ran together with families there, and also for members of a community of Essenes. After murder of Menakhem by his opponents in Jerusalem the escaped supporters among whom there was his nephew Eliezer Bin-Yair who became subsequently the commander of fortress ran in Masada and were locked there, is almost desperate. After destruction of the Second Temple in the 70th year of our era the last rebels took refuge in Masada. Constructed as the tsar's citadel, fortress became a shelter for simple people who used various parts of palaces and thin-walled rooms of a kazematny wall as premises. The synagogue, school, a mikva were built in addition. Conditions of accommodation defined the communal device of life of inhabitants of Masada, including systems of providing and religious departures. In the 72nd year, in 2 years after Tit took Jerusalem and destroyed the Temple, the Roman troops under the leadership of the procurator Flavia of Silva tried to take fortress. They established a long siege, hoping that besieged they will give up, without having sustained hunger and thirst. Silva's camp totaled from 10 to 15 thousand people while besieged in Masada there were 967 people, including men, women and children. The siege proceeded several months during which Romans continued attempts to make an embankment on the western slope. This embankment is visible and now though disputes among archeologists, what its part natural and what is filled by Romans are conducted. Below from West side of the mountain there are several reconstruction of obsidional tools made by Hollywood for shooting about Masada and left here as a gift. The Roman army included the tenth legion with usual accessories and thousands of captured Jews used as unqualified labor. Romans settled down in 9 camps surrounding the mountain and connected by shaft. Fortress could be taken only by break of a wall and direct attack. The huge earth shaft constructed on West side of the mountain opened easy access to a wall. Legionaries used obsidional cars and moved ahead under cover of arrows and stones. After seven months of a siege Romans made a breach in a wall that defined Masada's destiny and led the besieged Jews to adoption of their last scary decision. As a result of a siege one of walls was damaged, the besieged sikariya built new, partly an earth wall with wooden fastenings. But when Romans set fire east constructions, the Jewish soldiers, understanding that it is impossible to leave fortress, decided to die voluntarily not to be captivated.
