There are many different types of coupling, but the majority is based on one or several friction plates, densely compressed with each other or with flywheel springs. Frictional material is very similar on used earlier almost always contained asbestos in brake shoes, bezasbestovy materials are used recently. Smoothness of inclusion and switching off of transfer is provided with slipping of constantly rotating drive plate attached to the crankshaft of the engine, rather driven disk connected through slit to the gearbox.
The effort from clutch pedal is transferred to the mechanism mechanical (lever or rope) or the hydraulic drive.
Pressing clutch pedal (squeezing, switching off) parts clutch plates, as a result leaving between them free space, and release of pedal (inclusion) leads to dense compression of the leader and conducted disks.
The driven disk of coupling consists of actually disk with spring plates to which two friction facings are riveted or pasted independently from each other. Such fastening of pads provides their discrepancy at the switched - off coupling, at inclusion spring plates gradually contract, providing gradual engagement. The central part of clutch plate — nave — has splined joint and moves on main drive shaft of the gearbox. The nave is connected to disk movably, through the damping springs and friction washers of quencher of shifting jerks (are visible in picture) serving for alignment of the fluctuations of torsion torque which are inevitably arising under the influence of alternating loads and inertia of weight by its transfer from the engine to driving wheels and back. Under some conditions these fluctuations can lead to breakdown of shaft.
